Karl Lagerfeld tribute pop-up heads to London

04 October 2019

Fans of the late Karl Lagerfeld will be able to create their own white shirt using sketches and designs from the late fashion design legend at a tribute pop-up in London this weekend.

To be staged at the Karl Lagerfeld Store on Regent Street on 5 and 6 October, the “A Tribute to Karl: The White Shirt Project” pop-up will allow customers to produce their own designs via a touchscreen and witness their designs being printed direct to garment.

The technology behind the initiative is powered by fashion tech company YR. Only a limited number of customers at Karl Lagerfeld stores in Paris, London and Munich will be able to create a design, making them true collector's items. Customers will be able to choose from Lagerfeld sketches, quotes and logos to add their shirts, which have four customisable areas.

The touring pop-up follows on from an initiative unveiled during Paris Fashion Week where a number of leading fashion industry figures and celebrities, such as Kate Moss, Cara Delevigne and Lewis Hamilton, were asked to create bespoke white shirt designs to honour the designer, who passed away in February at the age of 85.

Lagerfeld was one of fashion's most prolific creative forces and one of the last surviving designers of the post-war Golden Era of couture in Paris. As well as creating his own label, he had headed up houses such as Chloe and Fendi, but was most famously associated with Chanel where he had been creative director from 1983 until his death. He was known for his personal signature style, which always included a white shirt with an exaggerated collar.

YR is known globally as the "kings of customisation". Originally launched seven years ago by Welsh school friends, Tim Williams and Tom Hogan, YR now works with fashion brands including Michael Kors, Nike and Ralph Lauren, among others, and has offices in New York, LA, Hong Kong and Tokyo. It is on course for a turnover of £10m this year.
