John Lewis weekly sales drop after Black Friday

18 December 2019

John Lewis has reported a total sales drop of -11.9% year-on-year in the week ending 14 December.

The company suggests that the drop is due to trade being "more subdued following the Black Friday period", as a combination of wet weather and understated post-Black Friday sales took its toll.

The retailer however noted the success of its in-store events, which had a 16% footfall increase and 17.2% sales increase compared to last year.

A survey of 2,000 British shoppers by TheIndustry.fashion revealed that 23% of shoppers overall said they planned to shop for fashion during the Black Friday period this year, but that figure rises to 40% for Gen Z consumers. The survey revealed however that 27% normally shop for fashion during Black Friday, which correctly suggested consumers may hold back this year.
