John Lewis weekly fashion sales up 3.8%
Bellwether retailer John Lewis has posted its latest weekly sales figures showing fashion up 3.8% compared to the same week in the previous year.
The business said that baby wear, jewellery and men's formal fashion were particular standout performers in the week ending 2 July. This is the first full week of trading figures to be released by John Lewis post the Brexit vote.
With many reports showing a drop in consumer confidence following]the Leave vote on 23 June, John Lewis' performance has remained robust. Overall John Lewis posted sales up 2.1% at £90.77m but the John Lewis Partnership sales, which also include supermarket Waitrose, dipped by 0.8%.
Waitrose's performance was down 2.8%, which had been a surprise, since the comparable week in 2015 had seen temperatures hit 35 degrees and, consequently, a low shopper turnout.
