British designer John Galliano has become the latest in a line of high end designers to announce the decision to drop fur from his collections.

Galliano, who is creative director of Maison Margiela, said in an interview with French Elle that he had been persuaded to make the move following a meeting with PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews, which had co-incided with a decision to change his own lifestyle.

“Today we don’t want a product, we want ethics, a firm that defends the values that we admire,” said Galliano, who also revealed that he had become vegetarian.

The designer, who widely used fur while creative director at Christian Dior, also said that his dog had influenced his new way of thinking. Gipsy the dog had been part of his rehab process following his controversial departure from Dior, in 2011.

"[Gipsy] is part of the therapy that I started in Arizona. The idea is to take care of someone else, to get out of my egocentrism: my life is more balanced," he explained.

Galliano joins a growing group of prominent designers and brands to ditch real fur from their designs, in part down to ethics and customer pressure but also due to developments in new man-made alternatives, including Michael Kors, Tom Ford, Versace, Gucci, Jimmy Choo and Furla. Luxury online fashion group Yoox Net-A-Porter also revealed last year that all of its sites would be going fur-free.
