JD Sports cuts nearly 200 jobs as it closes Derby warehouse

JD Sports Fashion has decided to close its distribution centre in Derby, resulting in the loss of almost 200 jobs.

Workers based at Derby Commercial Park, located off Raynesway, were told they were being let go on Friday following a six-week consultation period, according to the BBC.

The British sportswear retailer had signed a 20-year lease on the newly built 514,000 sq ft facility three years ago.

A spokesperson from JD Sports told the publication: "We have made the difficult decision to close our Derby distribution centre and are working with all those affected to ensure they are fully supported through this challenging period."

The decision follows a strategic review of JD Sports' global supply chain network, which explored all options available to the business.

A process is now in place to see if there are alternative roles within the business for affected staff.

The company also previously said it was working with local employers and employment agencies to support staff in finding alternative employment, alongside wellbeing support in line with its processes.

Last month, JD Sports Fashion reported higher global sales after opening 85 new stores this year, but warned that the market remains "volatile".

The high street retailer said its total sales grew by 2.4% over the three months to August, driven by growth in North America and Europe. However, sales in the UK slipped by 0.8% year-on-year.
