JD Sports blocks Boohoo board director appointment

JD Sports has withdrawn its consent for its non-executive director Kath Smith to join the board of online fashion retailer Boohoo in the same capacity.

In a terse statement to the stock exchange, Manchester-based Boohoo said it was "disappointed" that JD Sports had withdrawn its consent for Smith to join its board on 1 May and that it "will seek a suitable replacement as soon as possible".

Smith has been on the board of JD Sports since May of last year and has previously been general manager and vice-president of The North Face EMEA.

Boohoo has emerged as one of the winners of the COVID-19 crisis revealing that its sales in April had grown year on year as it was successfully able to pivot its product focus from party wear to loungewear. In the year to 29 February its sales soared by 44% to £1.23bn.

JD Sports will be announcing its year end results on 7 July having delayed the announcement due to the coronavirus crisis.
