JD Sports appoints former BT Marketing Chief as Non-Executive Director

JD Sports has appointed former BT Chief Brand and Marketing Officer Suzi Williams as a Non-Executive Director, with effect from 16 May 2022.

JD Sports recently pledged to inject more diversity into its board line-up after long-standing chair of the remuneration committee Andrew Leslie, who had said on the board for 10 years, was voted out by shareholders.

During Williams's 10-year role at BT, between 2005 – 2015, Williams was credited with the sponsorship strategy for the London 2012 Olympic Games, taking the brand “from drab to fab”, and the successful launch of BT Sport.

Williams has also spent 30 years running global consumer brands and businesses for blue chip companies including Procter & Gamble, Orange and the BBC. She now combines FTSE Plc non-executive roles with board advisory positions to technology start-ups.

Williams is also currently Non-Executive Director at Telecom Plus Plc & Zegona Communications Plc, where she chairs both the nominations and remuneration committees. She was previously Non-Executive Director at The AA Plc, and a Non-Executive Director & Chair of the Remuneration Committee at Workspace Group Plc.

Additionally, Williams has served on charity and government boards including The Great Campaign for The Cabinet Office which promotes UK business overseas.

JD Sports Executive Chairman, Peter Cowgill, said: “I am pleased to welcome Suzi to the JD Board of Directors. Suzi brings a significant amount of consumer marketing and management experience to the group. It is intended that, in due course, Suzi will take up the role of Remuneration Committee Chair.

“The appointment of Suzi is a further indication of the progress that is being made to strengthen the board with the appointment of new members with extensive skills, experience and expertise, for the benefit of all stakeholders.”
