Interview with Renee M. Waters, Founder of HauteConsult

One of our most recent Industry members, Renee M. Waters, is the founder and chief consultant of lifestyle, fashion and luxury industries service company, HauteConsult. Her successful London-based agency focuses on bespoke business solutions for her clients, covering a large array of services from recruitment solutions, business development consulting, business introductions and networking events. Renee's long career in fashion - from luxury retail management, operations, retail sales coaching and ultimately recruitment- makes her an expert in finding top talent to fit within her clients' teams. Whether it be for start-ups or luxury corporations, Renee prides herself in applying the same work ethic and dedication to each and every company for which she consults.

Can you tell us a bit more about the company that you founded, HauteConsult?

HauteConsult was born out of my passion for all things related to the industries of fashion, luxury, and lifestyle, but ultimately I (and my business partners) wanted to bring a fresh approach to consulting in this space. HauteConsult employs its network to bring people together for career or sales opportunities and/or just to network for future, mutually beneficial relationships. Each consulting engagement is bespoke in strategy and handled as if we were employees of the client. Your passion is our passion.

Among the many bespoke business services that HauteConsult offers, which ones are the most popular among your clients?

Right now, the recruitment services and specially-curated networking events are the most popular. HauteConsult has successfully hired a head of design for one of our clients, provided sales professionals and buyers to others, and introduced subject matter experts to different start-ups in this space. We have a talent pipeline in various sectors in whom we can truly depend.

You’ve worked in fashion a long time but in quite disparate sectors, would you say fashion recruitment is your ultimate calling?

Yes, it is my calling. I have worked as management in luxury retail and later became a headhunter/recruiter in the industry. There were also my experiences as a recruiter and consultant in other industries such as finance/accounting, IT, media, and investment banking for which I am grateful as well, since some of those roles are mirrored in the corporate offices of this industry. Those that know me know that I am a true networker and always have the best interests of my network at heart. Fashion recruitment simply combines all of my "loves."

Who or what is your inspiration as a keen fashion devotee?

As to what is my inspiration, I would say travel, visiting vintage shops all over the world, experiencing different cultures and art installations anywhere! In terms of people, I have great admiration for my mother and grandmother, Lee Radziwill, Andre Leon Talley and Pat Cleveland.

What other Industry members have you worked with? And if none, in what capacity are you looking forward to working with other Industry members?

I have not yet had the pleasure of working with any of The Industry members personally, but during the Graduate Fashion Week sessions, Caroline Issa and I discovered we had an overlapping career at Nordstrom! I am really interested in the ever-changing landscape of fashion in the digital age. The goal of HauteConsult is to introduce fresh talent to established brands AND to introduce emerging brands to the mature talent they seek as they grow. I am looking forward to working with Industry members as a support to HauteConsult and vice versa.
