In 1993, Kate and Andy Space launched the American fashion brand Kate Spade New York. The company is known for its famous high quality and affordable handbags. The label soon expanded to clothing, jewellery, shoes, eyewear, accessories, fragrances and homeware.

In 1996, the Kate Spade brand opened its first boutique in New York. The business was sold to Neiman Marcus in 1999 and then to Liz Claiborne in 2006, after whicih the Spades left the business. In 2016, Kate Spade herself launched a new collection of luxury footwear and handbags under the brand name Frances Valentine, however the designer sadly passed away last year.

The company was purchased by Coach, Inc. in May 2017 and is now part of Tapestry, Inc.
