Established by Céline Vipiana in 1945, Celine is a French luxury fashion label. The company originally was created as a made-to-measure children's shoe business, easily recognisable by its logo, a red elephant created by Raymont Peynet. In 1960, the brand started to focus on ready-to-wear clothes for women with a sportswear approach and, in 1973, Celine redesigned its logo with an intertwined "C" Sulky canvas, linked to the Arc-de-Triomphe. In 1996, the brand was integrated into the LVMH group.
Under its previous creative director, British designer, Phoebe Philo it became the last work in grown-up, laid-back chic and cultivated a loyal global following. Philo fans were devastated when the designer quit and was replaced by Hedi Slimane, formerly of Saint Laurent and Dior Homme. Slimane caused consternation with his debut show for the brand (having previously caused consternation by dropping the acute accent from the e in its logo), shown in Paris in September 2018, as it featured his signature super-skinny, super-young models in super-short skirts.
Slimane appears to have listened to the criticism as his most recent collection shown in February 2019 was a volte face featuring 70s-inspired denim, culottes, midi skirts and dresses.
