What began in a small shop in West London, selling car boot finds and vintage fabric, has grown into a global business offering a modern vintage lifestyle. Cath Kidston opened her first store in 1993, in Notting Hill, she later described it as a "glorified junk shop", selling floral ironing board covers.

Today, the brand is known for its colourful, witty prints evoking a sense of nostalgia and fun. In April 2020, Cath Kidston has filed notice of its intention to appoint Alvarez & Marsal as administrators as the stresses of the coronavirus shut-downs affected the retailer.
