Uniqlo is set to open the doors of its hotly anticipated new central London flagship store this week on Regent Street, the same street where the Japanese fashion giant opened one of its first stores outside of its home market 20 years ago.

This new location (formerly home to Superdry, which has relocated to Oxford Street) is also home to premium US brand Theory, which is a stablemate of Uniqlo in the Fast Retailing empire. It represents a significant investment for Fast Retailing and is something of a statement of its commitment to the UK market.

“The store was designed to reflect the Spirit of London and aims to make our LifeWear offering more accessible and sustainable for our loyal customers who have supported us in the UK for these past 20 years," said Uniqlo Europe CEO Taku Morikawa.

Part of its aim in capturing the Spirit of London is to showcase artworks from young and diverse artists with pieces from Rosie Haynes, Flatboy and Yolande Mutale adding a unique flavour to the store.

The retailer has also been at pains to respect the heritage and features of this unique 19th Century Grade 2 Listed building, which is a stone's throw away from London's heritage tailoring district in and around Savile Row. For instance a Grade 1 Listed dome space on the Lower Ground Floor, which once existed as a fully operational Barber Shop in the 1920s (when Austin Reed was housed there), is now home to a display for the UNIQO Masterpiece collection.

Meanwhile over at Theory, architectural studio Sybarite has created a sculpted and curvaceous space from natural materials including cork and organic clay.

Sustainability is front and centre with Repair and Recycle bins used for contributing to the RE-UNIQLO circular program and donating to the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, as part of the brand’s long standing partnership. In addition there are four special focus areas, including an upcycling project with local students at Central St Martins and the company’s very first Repair Studio in partnership with East London repair shop, Studio Masachuka.

Local businesses are also showcase with flower colour-matched with the brand’s 20 colours of linen, provided by South East London florist, JamJar Flowers alongside a pop-up from long-time partner, Perky Blenders.

The store will open its doors to shoppers this Thursday, 21 April.
