JD Sports opened a new 18,000 sq ft flagship store at the Metrocentre in Gateshead on Saturday 25 June, it’s largest store to date in the North East.

The self-styled ‘King of Trainers’ retailer saw local sneaker and streetwear fanatics fill the store on launch day, with many taking advantage of a customisation area where they could put their own creative mark on their new purchases for no additional cost.

To celebrate the store opening, Geordie DJ and producer, Jerome Price - who has worked with artists such as Deadmau5 and has over 60 million streams - got the crowds dancing with an Ibiza-inspired soundtrack, alongside “local Newcastle TikTok power couple”, Nathan and Grace, who welcomed consumers into the new store.

The opening party vibes look set to continue for one lucky JD fan who could be swapping the North East for the party island of Ibiza thanks to a special in-store competition.

Shoppers who spend more than £100 in-store from now until Saturday 9 July will be in with a shot at winning flights, a stay at the Ibiza Rocks hotel, one of the world’s most popular party hotspots and much sought after tickets to the JD Pool Party in Ibiza for them and three friends.

A statement from JD Sports Fashion, said: “JD Sports has occupied a special place on the nation’s high streets for over 40 years. We pride ourselves on embracing the communities that shop with us and the culture that surrounds us, and this new Metrocentre store embodies that commitment.”

Ben Cox of Sovereign Centros, Senior Asset Manager for Metrocentre, commented: “It’s fantastic to unveil the new flagship JD Sports store, a truly exceptional fit-out from one of our leading brands. The store is set to be the largest in the region, providing an upgraded destination for streetwear and sports apparel from over 40 of the biggest and best brands around.

“The opening follows the recent launch of H Beauty by Harrods in lower Town Square earlier this month with other exciting developments in the pipeline. Major occupiers continue to invest in Metrocentre as the leading regional destination for retail, hospitality, and leisure.”
