In Numbers: the week in fashion in figures

07 August 2020

Retail watchers have said all along that the ability to open stores was no "silver bullet" to recovery post-lockdown, and this week has shown that to be the case.

The week began with the news that Pink Shirtmaker was closing its store on the historic Jermyn Street after depressed post-lockdown footfall in the capital made the store unviable.

As we progressed through the week more retailers either announced store closures, DW Sports and M&Co, or it was revealed that stores were under review at chains including River Island and Jigsaw.

On the positive side global fashion retailer Mango said that recoveries in some of its key European markets and a stellar growth in digital sales meant that it was on course to grow sales this year, and while COVID had battered sales at Joules, the premium fashion retailer revealed the business was outperforming expectations post-lockdown.
