Footfall edged up this week as British consumers took tentative steps back to the high street but the introduction of the "Rule of Six" may well dent fragile consumer confidence in the coming weeks. Worse than that, with talk of Christmas effectively being cancelled this years, those retailers that only just staggered out of lockdown may not make it to Christmas if consumers stay home during the most crucial trading quarter of the year.

Perhaps the most depressing number to have emerged this week is that the total number of job losses in retail has topped 125,000 already this year with many more to come.
