In Brief. AW19 Trend to Go – Cape Crusaders

Sandra Halliday
26 February 2019

The cape has been making a big impact on runways in all the fashion cities so far this Fashion Month with the variety on offer showing just how much it’s figuring in designers’ thinking for AW19.

At its simplest, it’s an all-covering cold weather outerwear piece that’s particularly relevant in a season where volume is a big story (even many of the "traditional" woollen coats are big this season, which is de rigueur when many of the jackets knits, dresses et al worn underneath are also bulky). Find it in fluffy faux fur - either ultra-realistic or fuzzy fun fur - in knit, felt, pony, shearling or tweeds. The shorter capes that were big news a few seasons back are in evidence, but there are many more that come in midi or even maxi lengths for maximum coverage in cold weather.

Capes also make an impact for evening, cut to end at the bustline, waist, hips, knees or to sweep the floor in dramatic printed silks, rich velvets and lace. And for those whose taste veers towards the casual, you can also find them in puffer versions, in water repellant synthetics, cuts to reference cagoules or serapes.
