HRH The Princess Royal sends message of support to UK fashion

HRH The Princess Royal, the long-standing president of the UKFT, has sent a letter of support to UK fashion brands and manufacturers "well aware of the many challenges and hardships faced by the industry".

Princesse Anne has been president of the trade body for 35 years and carries out regular visits to UK fashion businesses, which have been put on hold due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

In a letter to the industry she expressed thanks for its work to support the country during the crisis: "I know from UKFT that a number of companies in this industry are actively offering to support the NHS with personal protective clothing, with some switching production from traditional products, for which the industry is known, to much needed hand-sanitiser and other products for UK care homes."

Companies such as Burberry and Barbour have switched production at their factories in Castleford and South Shields respectively to create PPE for the NHS, while many smaller brands and designers have joined the national effort which has been co-ordinated by the UKFT and the British Fashion Council.

The Princess Royal said also expressed her concern for companies that have had to temporarily cease production and furlough staff saying "we hope that all will stay safe until it is safe for life to return to some normality."

UKFT is currently lobbying for fashion businesses – the so-called "forgotten middle" – who fall through the gaps of the Government COVID-19 aid schemes to ensure they get the support they need.
