How to reduce staff turnover in the retail sector

Many retailers suffer from a high turnover of staff and this can affect all areas of the business, from customer service to the growth of the business. Although it can be difficult to retain staff in this sector, there are various steps you can take to improve employee relations and reduce high turnover.

Flexibility

One of the main reasons staff leave their roles within this sector is down to being unhappy with their shift pattern. It is important for businesses to offer flexibility with shifts and to try and accommodate the needs of their employees, wherever possible. This will show employees that they are valued and will make them less likely to want to leave the company. A specialised consultant can help offer advice on creating a flexible working environment.

Competitive Salary

In order to retain good members of staff, it is important to offer competitive salaries. This will mean that employees will be less likely to be enticed by other offers. A good, pro-active retail business will regularly check the salaries being offered in the market and will adjust to suit.

Opportunities

If you want to reduce turnover in your retail business, you need to give staff a reason to stay. Although salary is obviously a factor, it is also important to offer opportunities to grow within the business. For example, progression into Team Leader or Area Manager positions. Employees should be rewarded for their efforts and there should be a clear line of progression with the business.
