House of Fraser closes last Central London store

03 January 2023

Following the closure of its store at Westfield London’s shopping centre in Shepherd’s Bush, House of Fraser has said goodbye to Central London.

This Westfield exit follows the closure of House of Fraser's Oxford Street store in January 2022. According to the developer’s plans, six floors of the building will be transformed into offices, with an indoor pool and gym area and a rooftop restaurant with a 360-degree view added alongside existing retail space. It has not yet been announced when building work will begin.

The historic retailer, founded in 1849, has shut several locations in recent months including stores in Leeds, Norwich and Huddersfield. The High Wycombe branch is also reportedly set for closure in the coming year.

The chain will be left with 30 shops in the UK, a reduction of almost 50% since it went into administration in 2018. House of Fraser's parent group, Frasers Group, has instead focused efforts on its successful Frasers concept.

The Westfield London site is set to be taken over by the Ministry of Sound Group, who will turn the space into The Ministry Shepherd’s Bush, a new concept combining workspace, a multi-studio fitness offer and a rooftop bar and restaurant.

The Ministry Shepherd’s Bush follows the opening of The Ministry Borough Road, one of the most popular places to work and network in London. It is the latest venture from global entertainment and hospitality brand Ministry of Sound, which opened the doors of its eponymous south London nightclub in 1991.
