The first ever Holland & Barrett Wellness Trends 2022 report stated that collagen was going to continue to be a key wellness trend following strong sales in the past year.

Between 2020 and 2021 sales of collagen supplements had increased by 94%, with ingestible collagen sales specifically increasing by 22% in the past 12 months, the report stated.

"Beauty from within is a trend that shows no sign of abating and in 2021 ingestible collagen went stratospheric. We see the category going from strength to strength in 2022, with new actives being added to the great benefits collagen has to offer – what we think of as ‘Collagen+’," H&B said.

Another key trend outlined in the report was consumer's focus on healthy sleep, with the retailer outlining that it was planning to introduce nighttime supplements in the new year based on the findings that 65% of the UK population experienced a sleep issue between October 2020 and March 2021.

Gut-friendly products were also seen as a key future opportunity, with the retailer seeing a 10% across its gut health range, while sales of fermented foods and beverages such as Kombucha saw a year-on-year increase of 60%.

Lastly the report forecasted that "bio-hacking" was also continuing to become more important in the next few years as customers are increasingly quantifying their health.

It defined the trend as consumers trying to change their chemistry or physiology by being more selective about what they ingest or interact with, stating that "nutrigenomics" specifically, which focuses on nutrition, is forecasted to grow worldwide by 15.5% in the next five years.
