H&M to launch second-hand garments in its domestic market

Swedish fashion retailer H&M is launching second-hand garments in its domestic market, announced its sustainability manager Felicia Reuterswärd on LinkedIn.

Called "pre-loved" the second-hand range will launch in Sweden first and then Germany, and will be potentially rolled out across e-commerce websites in other countries.

The secondhand products on offer will be shipped via Sellpy, a platform the H&M Group has been investing in since 2015. On offer will be second-hand products from H&M Group brands as well as third-party labels including ASOS, Nike, Zara and Abercrombie & Fitch.

Reuterswärd wrote: "Decade of action here we go- H&M Sweden has taken the first step in an integrated experience for second hand garments on hm.com, one of the biggest platforms for fashion! Let’s make second hand fashion the new normal!"

On the website H&M further emphasised its sustainability strategy, citing Ellen MacArthur Foundation data that clothing production has doubled in the last 15 years while usage has decreased by 40%. "We need to consume less of the planet's resources and we need to use what we already have. That's why we introduce pre-loved," H&M wrote (translated from Swedish).

The news comes one year after the H&M Group announced that it had expanded its Sellpy secondhand clothing platform to the Netherlands and Austria, after originally launching it in its home country of Sweden and later expanding to Germany.

In its latest publication of financial results Helena Helmersson, CEO of the H&M Group, highlighted the group's concentrated efforts to double its sales while halving its carbon footprint, by 2030. The latter goal is linked to the H&M group's COP26 commitment, with the aim to reduce carbon footprint in absolute figures by 56% by 2030 taking 2019 as a baseline.
