High street chief has eye on Next big thing

Lord Wolfson of Aspley Guise is only certain of one thing that will be on British high streets in 10 to 15 years’ time: “People walking down it will be wearing clothes.” The chief executive of Next, the high street fashion chain, is also fairly sure that there will still be shops in 15 years, too, but says they will be “fewer in number, possibly smaller and much less expensive”.

These were some of the ruminations in the bookish chief executive’s annual statement to investors as he revealed another solid set of results and outlined what might happen to the chain, and the retail sector, in the next 15 years.
