Fashion and retail entrepreneur Harold Tillman has been appointed President of the Luxury Law Summit in recognition of a lifetime dedicated to luxury and fashion.

The summit was designed to bring luxury industry leaders together with legal, ethical and sustainability advisors to create conversations on the future of luxury business, and the next summit takes place this Wednesday, 22 September, at the British Museum in London.

Tillman will begin his stewardship of the educational and events group this month, providing guidance to aspiring luxury founders, and advising, connecting and helping luxury enterprises across sectors.

Luxury Law Summit CEO, Mary Heaney, said: “Harold Tillman is one of the major forces in British fashion, not only creating, shaping and driving forward a number of British heritage brands, but taking a major interest in the sustainability and ethical fashion agenda.  His life is characterised by giving back and his support to young designers and businesses is legendary and we are delighted he has accepted this important role.”

Tillman, 75, has been a major player in the British fashion industry for the past five decades, from his tenure at Jaeger and Aquascutum to his role as Chairman of the British Fashion Council (BFC) up until 2014.

During his time at the BFC, he bolstered London Fashion Week’s reputation as a global showcase for British design talent, and he also launched the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund to assist talented British designers.

Tillman started out at the London College of Fashion in the early 1960’s, followed by an apprenticeship at Savile Row tailors, Kilgour. He was fast-tracked to the role of Managing Director at just 23 years-old, and he set about innovating the brand, bringing in a young Paul Smith and collaborating with footballer George Best, transforming Kilgour into a hugely successful business in the late 1960’s and 1970’s.

Giving back to the industry saw him set up a scholarship at London College of Fashion in 2006, pledging £1 million to sponsor 10 MA students each year. He is Chairman of the Ethical Fashion Forum, former Chairman of the Alumni board of the University of the Arts and Fashion Matters fund, raising funds for students, and a former trustee of the V&A, as well as a champion of sustainability through Common Objective.

The Luxury Law Summit is an annual gathering of the leaders in luxury business and law in London, New York and Mexico. This year’s event on 22 September features the likes of Kristina Blahnik, CEO of Manolo Blahnik, Ceanne Fernandes Wong, CEO and Co-Founder of Cocoon, and Laudomia Pucci, President of Emilio Pucci Heritage.
