Government watchdog launch probe into retailers over replica football kits

The UK competition watchdog has this week launched an investigation into sportswear retailers over the price of replica football kits.

The watchdog is probing football club Rangers FC and Hummel, which manufactures the club’s kit, as well as retailers Greaves Sports and JD Sports.

The investigation has been allocated a 6 month window but could take up to 18 months and will examine potential breaches of competition law.

The regulator said: “At this stage the CMA believes that it has reasonable grounds to suspect one or more breaches of competition law.

“The CMA has not reached a view as to whether there is sufficient evidence of an infringement of competition law for it to issue a statement of objections or, ultimately, an infringement decision, to any party under investigation.”

A spokesman for JD Sports said: “We are co-operating fully with the investigation and are unable to comment further at this time.”

The regulator concluded with the comment: "Not all cases result in the CMA issuing a statement of objections or an infringement decision."
