GLAAD teams up with Teletubbies for first-ever Pride collection

LGBTQ+ charity GLAAD has unveiled an unusual 2021 Pride collection, featuring the foursome of Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po from 1990's TV programme Teletubbies.

The collection celebrates the Teletubbies rainbow-coloured diversity and offbeat quirkiness, centered around two themes - “Big Hugs, Big Love” and “Teletubbies Love Pride”.

The pieces, which encourage consumers "to love who you are", include a bucket hat, sling bag, muscle tee and tube socks. The Collection also features a limited quantity of bespoke, made-to-order two-piece suits.

Many in the LGBTQ+ community have long celebrated Tinky Winky as a queer icon, with the possibility of queerness raised in 1999 by anti-LGBTQ televangelist pastor Jerry Falwell, who suggested the character is a gay role model because he carried a purse and had an antenna shaped like a triangle, a historical symbol of Pride.

WildBrain, the owner of Teletubbies, Chief Brands Officer Michael Riley, commented: “The Teletubbies have always embraced their own offbeat quirkiness and sense of style. We’ve taken the most iconic elements fans know and love about the Teletubbies and designed a playful collection with fashion flair that we hope fans will love to wear this Pride Month and all year-long.”

The limited-edition collection of 90s-inspired streetwear is available now, with proceeds benefiting GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) to support its cultural-changing work to accelerate acceptance for the LGBTQ community.
