London-based fashion designer Giles Deacon has been appointed as design director of luxury accessories group Aspinal of London.
Deacon’s appointment follows the launch of a capsule collection for the brand, called Giles x Aspinal, for which the designer was asked to “dress” his favourite products from the Aspinal collection using his signature illustrations. The collection includes handbags, silk scarves, pouches, luggage tags and a diary.
Deacon will continue to head up his Giles Deacon Couture business, which offers bespoke and bridal services upon appointment. One of his most recent high profile commissions was the creation of Pippa Middleton’s (sister of the Duchess of Cambridge) wedding dress for her marriage to James Matthews last year.
A graduate of Central Saint Martins and a contemporary of designers such as Alexander McQueen and Luella Bartley, Deacon began his career in fashion houses such as a Bottega Veneta and Gucci before establishing his own label in 2003. He was appointed creative director at Ungaro in 2010 but latterly has been focusing on his couture and illustration work.
Aspinal of London is headed up by Lisa Montague, who joined the company having previously been president and CEO of Spanish luxury house Loewe and chief operating officer of Mulberry. The company was founded by its chairman Iain Burton in 2001.
