Gabicci celebrates 50th anniversary with limited edition collection

Gabicci is launching a limited edition four-piece capsule collection for SS23 in celebration of the brand’s 50th anniversary year.

The four styles have been reworked in 12g Milano knit from archived original Gabicci knitwear designs produced in the mid-1970s, replicating the original garments with alcantara trims and the famous gold ‘G’ branding.

Kamla Patel, Sales Manager at Gabicci, who recently became the first ever female Chair of menswear fashion agency and brand collective, The 39 Club, said: “These are some of the best selling lines we designed back in the day, replicated with a few modern touches for a new audience.”

The collection, retailing at a slightly higher price point that the Gabicci mainline, at £110 - £120, will be sold by very select independent stockists, from March 2023, including Stuarts London, 80s Casual Classics, Atom Retro and Woven in Durham.

There have only been 150 of each style produced, each piece coming in a branded 50th anniversary cotton bag.

However, there will be two additional pieces added to the limited edition SS23 line, in collaboration with the Gregory Isaacs Foundation. The late Jamaican reggae star, who sadly passed in 2010, was a big fan of Gabicci knitwear and this will be the second time a small run of pieces – created from styles he originally wore during his career – is to be offered, following the big success of the original collaboration in 2019.

A similar 50th anniversary collection will also be available for AW23, with four new styles, again taken straight from Gabicci’s archive – expected to be in selected stockists from mid-September 2023.

Gabicci was acquired by Manchester fashion group Boi Trading Company Limited in 2018. After over 45 years in business, and with customers throughout Europe, the company then re-focused its attention on its core brands, ‘Gabicci Classic’ and ‘Gabicci Vintage’.

Gabicci Limited was founded in 1973 by two friends, Jack Sofier and Alex Pyser, with Sofier having left shirt manufacturer Rael Brook to start his own business. His wife, Maureen, suggested a name for the new company following a visit to the Italian seaside town of Gabicce Mare, and the brand was born.

Operating from offices and a basement warehouse in Maddox Street, London W1, the merchandise on offer was Italian knitwear, in acetate/polyester for the spring season and wool with suede trim for autumn.

By 1975 the brand fast became an underground style leader and embodied a look adopted by the ‘Northern Soul’ music scene. Then, towards the end of the 1970s, Gabicci also became a brand of choice for ‘rude boys’ and ‘rastas’, later also becoming popular with football ‘casuals’ and famously worn by actor David Jason in his role as Del Boy in ‘Only Fools and Horses’.
