Further ASOS jobs at risk at Watford site

ASOS, the online fashion giant, is said to be considering further job cuts, this time at its Watford customer care centre.

The Mail on Sunday has reported that the company is considering 100 job cuts at the site, following a recent review. These would be in addition to the 100 jobs at risk at its North London headquarters.

Most of the jobs at risk at its HQ near Camden are said to be in marketing and come after ASOS reported that its half-year pre-tax profits had slumped 87% to £4m.

Despite the profits crash sales grew 14%, or 12% at constant currency, to £1.3bn, in the six months to 28 February.

The company said the slump in profits had been down to issues bedding in a new warehousing facility in Atlanta in the US along with a high level of promotions and discounting across the UK market.

It has also recently announced it was planning to clamp down on serial returners by cancelling the accounts of shoppers who routinely return large amounts of goods, with industry watchers estimating the returns level to be around 40%.

ASOS CEO Nick Beighton has, however, said, he was confident the company will turn in an improved performance in the second half of year.
