Former Glasgow Debenhams to be turned into offices and rooftop restaurant

The former Debenhams store in Glasgow's St. Enoch Centre is to be transformed into offices, leisure space and a rooftop garden according to updated transformation plans by the building owner Sovereign Centros.

The redevelopment process will start after the Glasgow City Council approves the proposed 'masterplan', with a planning application currently being prepared, which is expected to be considered by a committee in spring/summer 2022.

Following a public consultation in June the original plans were updated to include more consideration for useful and practical community space, an increased number of trees and rain gardens (which reduce an overflow of rain water from roofs) and widened streets around the development.

Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, commented: “More than ever, we need to encourage people into our city centre, and the mixed-use development proposed for St. Enoch would allow us to maintain our position as a leading retail destination, while creating a well-connected, well designed community. We are very supportive of this investment for Glasgow City Centre and look forward to seeing plans develop.”

The former Debenhams store in Beverley was taken over by the Dunelm brand in October, whilst it was announced its former Leeds store is to be transformed into a  "student-led, mixed use" scheme in September.

But not all is bleak for Debenhams, which was bought by fast-fashion group Boohoo at the beginning of 2021. Last month it announced that a stand-alone beauty store will open in Manchester later this year.
