Former Debenhams store in Beverley taken over by Dunelm

The former Debenhams store in Beverley is to be given a new lease of life by homewares retailer Dunelm.

Set in the East Yorkshire town's Flemingate development, the arrival of the department store is expected to create about 40 jobs, said the centre's owners Wykeland Group.

The new two-storey shop will be expected to open "just before Christmas" with building work to begin in the next few weeks.

Besides its new 41,000 sq ft Flemingate store, Dunelm has a network of more than 170 outlets across the country.

"We're delighted to announce Dunelm, one of the country's leading retailers, is bringing its exciting new superstore format to Flemingate and that the former Debenhams store will once again be fully occupied," said Dominic Gibbons, managing director of Hull-based Wykeland.

"The closure of Debenhams created a highly-desirable retail opportunity in a prime location within a vibrant destination and we were always confident of attracting a high-quality new operator. We've now delivered on that confidence. Dunelm's commitment reflects the strength of Flemingate and also the appeal of Beverley as a prosperous and growing retail and leisure marketplace."

All of Debenhams stores were closed earlier this year following the chain's liquidation. The brand and its online business were acquired by Boohoo Group and the Debenhams name lives on in online form only.

Some former stores have been transformed into residential-led, mixed-use schemes, while Frasers Group has taken over a former store in Wolverhampton and transformed it into its high end Frasers department store concept. Meanwhile in Bournemouth, the historic former Debenhams store will be restored to its former glory and revived as Bobby's (the independent department store that stood on the site from 1915 until it was transformed into a Debenhams in 1972).
