Following the government’s announcement of the second lockdown on Saturday, footfall across all UK retail destinations rose by an average of 11.4% from Sunday 1 – Wednesday 4 November compared to the previous week.

Shoppers were making the most of all retail destinations still be open ahead of the second lockdown commencing on 5 November, 2020, according the latest figures from retail intelligence experts Springboard.

Insights Director at Springboard, Diane Wehrle, said: “The extent of the uplift meant that footfall in retail parks was higher than in 2019 on each of the comparable three days from Monday to Wednesday, and was 11.9% higher than in 2019 on Wednesday.

“This is the first time that footfall has been higher than last year since the pandemic. The drop from last year also narrowed significantly in high streets and shopping centres, with footfall -19.2% lower than 2019 in high streets and just -8.7% lower than 2019 in shopping centres.”

In sharp contrast, footfall up to 10am yesterday – the first day of the lockdown – was 15.8% lower than Thursday last week, and the gap in footfall across all retail destinations between last year and this year has widened significantly to -48.9% from just -9.2% on Wednesday.
