Footfall down -20.2% year-on-year due to COVID-19 outbreak

Data and intelligence provider Springboard has today revealed a footfall decline of -20% year-on-year to 17 March, as store closures increase and high streets become deserted amid the coronavirus crisis.

Diane Wehrle, marketing and insights director at Springboard, said: “Last week started to reveal the significant impact that the coronavirus is likely to have on footfall in bricks and mortar destinations.

“Whilst the overall result for the week ending Saturday was better than three of the four preceding weeks, when severe rain hit most of the UK, the decline in footfall escalated rapidly from Thursday onwards. On Tuesday 17 March, footfall across all retail destinations declined by -20.2% year-on-year, and by -14.8% from Tuesday in the previous week.”

Prime minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday that people should avoid all non-essential contact with others, including visits to pubs, restaurants and theatres. While some establishments remain open, the rise of brands temporarily closing their bricks and mortar retail stores is rising on a daily basis.

Springboard, a leading provider of data and intelligence on customer activity in stores and destinations with customer counting and demographic profiling, is publishing daily footfall data on its website – with the COVID-19 situation changing from day to day.
