Foot Locker invests in underserved communities with new partnership

Foot Locker has announced a new partnership with the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, investing $750,000 in organisations supporting underserved youths and tackling inequality.

To re-enforce its commitment to support underserved communities and address health, wealth, and opportunity gaps, Foot Locker is launching the Community Empowerment Program, offering financial grants from $20,000 to organisations that offer a range of services for young people including sports-based youth development, mentoring, education and life skills support.

The community investment will also see Foot Locker engage store team members through in-store learning opportunities, community "clean-ups," mentoring, and other volunteer activities in nine locations across Europe and Canada including London, Paris and Toronto.

Richard Johnson, Chairman and CEO of Foot Locker said: "Inspiring and empowering youth culture is more than just a purpose statement; it is at the core of who we are. We are committed to driving meaningful change in communities that have been overlooked for too long. Today's announcement expands our efforts globally and helps us create more opportunity today that will lead to a stronger and more equitable future for the next generation."

The initiative is powered by the retailer’s ongoing Leading Education and Economic Development agenda, with Foot Locker pledging to commit $200 million dollars to education and economic development within the Black community.

Edwin Moses, Laureus Academy member, added: "This Community Empowerment Programme comes at a crucial time for the sports development sector. The covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly had a devastating impact throughout society, and community sports organisations that provide safe access to sports were hit hard.

"That has a domino effect throughout society, so this programme will help get those organisations back on their feet, using sport to help close the inequality gap in underserved communities."

The grant application process is now open and will close on 17 January 2022.
