Fila follows Fendi collaboration with Milan catwalk debut

Fila is really upping its game in the fashion stakes for SS19, following its high-end collaboration with Fendi for AW18. The Italian sportswear brand put on a catwalk show featuring men’s and womenswear at the recent Milan Fashion Week, its first ever international fashion show.

The show paid homage to the brand’s Italian heritage – dating back to Biella in 1911 - and drew on its rich sporting archive, particularly tennis, with a modern mix of technical pieces, putting a more chic spin on sportswear as it remains firmly on-trend. It’s a big step up for Fila, and a real flexing of its muscles in the fashion sportswear market.

For the women’s SS19 collection, the typical pleating of a tennis skirt is created in a long chiffon skirt that plays with proportions, and is either paired with combed fleece, or Lycra in an asymmetric bodysuit, or a technical jacket in sail cloth. Masculine pieces have inspired extremely feminine clothing. The typical one-piece tracksuit of the 1980’s has been reinvented as a seductive bodysuit.

Menswear features very 1980’s tracksuits, tennis shirts and shorts and baggy ensembles that wouldn’t have looked out of place at a 90’s rave. The collection clearly has more of a fashion focus and price points will be higher than brand's mainline, White and Black line collections and is available to buy now for EU retailers, with interest from the UK said to be strong.

The Fila x Fendi collaboration for AW18, which was launched in a Fendi pop-up shop in Selfridges and which runs until the end of September, features pullovers at £850, and bags at £1,350. Fila, but not as we know it.
