Fashion Friday: Iris the movie is out today

Lauretta Roberts
31 July 2015

Interior designer, innovator, inimitable, icon... Iris Apfel is 93 years old and one of New York's most stylish women. Make that, New York's most stylish woman. This week she has been taking London by storm to promote her documentary, simply named, Iris.

Made in collaboration with Albert Maysles, who was in his 80s when he made Iris and sadly passed away shortly afterwards, the film tracks her colourful life (and wardrobe), which has seen her work as a contributor for fashion industry bible WWD and as an interior designer for the White House.

However if you are hoping for some insider info on the nine different presidents she has worked for, you will be disappointed as she says she can't talk about the White House and chastises her 100-year-old husband Carl, for mentioning "a problem with Jackie [Kennedy]".

Nothing else about this movie disappoints - Kanye West, Bruce Weber and J Crew's Jenna Lyons all feature. But it is Iris, her clothes and her one-liners that really shine. "I don't have any rules," she says when asked about how she approaches fashion. "I'd only be breaking them, so what's the point?"

A series of screenings is taking place in London, and the film opens in select cinemas from today. It can also be purchased online via iTunes and Amazon.
