Fashion asked to help with production of face masks during COVID-19 crisis

The fashion industry is being asked to join the fight against COVID-19 by supporting the Government with the production of essential items, such as face masks.

The British Fashion Council is working with both the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) to connect them with businesses who can support them with the manufacturing of all essential items outside of ventilators.

Fashion designers, brands and manufacturers with spare capacity are urged to contact  to offer their services.

The Government has already called upon companies with suitable production lines to switch them to ventilator manufacturing, while some hotels have been offering up their properties to act as hospitals.

Craft brewer Brew Dog has also switched some of its production lines over to the creation of sanitising gel, which it is giving away to charities who need it. Other distilleries are doing the same and the Government is prioritising applications from manufacturers to enable them to produce denatured alcohol, a vital ingredient of hand sanitiser.

In France, French luxury conglomerate LVMH switched the production of some its perfume-making facilities to create hand sanitising gel, which it is supplying for free to French health authorities.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in his daily press briefing today that he though the country could “turn the tide of this disease” within 12 weeks.

“I think, looking at it all, that we can turn the tide within the next 12 weeks and I’m absolutely confident that we can send coronavirus packing in this country. But only if we all take the steps that we’ve outlined – that is vital," Johnson said.
