Extinction Rebellion plans action during London Fashion Week

Extinction Rebellion is planning to stage protests during the next edition of London Fashion Week in September and is urging consumers to stop buying new clothes for one year.

Two members of the environmental campaign group were interviewed the Port Eliot festival yesterday by former Vogue editor Emily Sheffield.

Sara Arnold, a Central Saint Martins trained designer, said the group was planning to stage a funeral for London Fashion Week as “that should be where it stops for ever … During this absolute emergency, celebrating new fashion, which is essentially what fashion week is doing, is not relevant," The Guardian reports.

Her fellow Extinction Rebellion member Tamsin Omond agreed that London Fashion Week  “should be a declaration of emergency, not a celebration”.

The pair are urging consumers to enjoy fashion by swapping clothes with friends and family, up-cycling and and buying used clothes, though they point out that consumers should consider how far items have been shipped.

In April activists from the group staged a mock catwalk event while blocking Oxford Circus in protest against the fast fashion industry.

London Fashion Week is adoption a different format this year, running ticketed events and catwalks for consumers alongside the trade event. The Designer Exhibition will also be open to the public and will centre on the British Fashion Council's #PositiveFashion initiative.

#PostiveFashion is led by three pillars: Sustainability, Equality & Diversity, Craftsmanship & Community and London Fashion Week is inviting designers to tell their story, showcase how products are made and bring their brands and stories to life for a trade and public audience alike.

London Fashion Week takes place from 13-17 September. Its main hub is at Store X on The Strand.
