Ellesse joins forces with Instagram’s ‘King of Trainers’ again for ‘Grand Slam’ capsule collection

Italian sportswear giant Ellesse has teamed up with acclaimed sneaker collector and Instagram ‘King of Trainers’ Franklin Boateng again for a new limited edition six-piece sports apparel and shoe ‘Grand Slam’ capsule collection.

Owned by Pentland Group, the majority shareholder of retailer JD Sports, which trades under the ‘Undisputed King of Trainers’ banner, Ellesse has teamed up previously on tennis shoes with Boateng, who has 119k Instagram followers, but this is the first time a full collection has been created.

The collaboration collection is a celebration of Ellesse’s rich history in tennis, particularly from the 1980s when the brand kitted out the likes of Boris Becker and Pat Cash, and consists of a two-tone blue tracksuit, polo shirt, T-shirt and shorts set and ‘Tanker’ tennis shoes.

The shoes come in a dual colour combination, with one foot in navy blue and the other in sky blue, with gold laces to represent one of the most prestigious prizes in tennis, the gold Wimbledon cup.

Boateng said: “This collection is not only an homage to iconic Ellesse tennis kits from the 1980s, it is also a celebration of my mum’s love of the sport that she passed on to me. She used to buy me the latest tennis shoes that the professional players were wearing.”

The capsule collection, priced between £30-£100, will be launching at the Offspring concession in Selfridges on 30 July 2022, and Boateng will be hosting a meet and greet on the day.

Established in 1959 in Italy by tailor Leonardo Servadio, Ellesse was initially inspired by the concept of style-conscious skiwear. Since then, Ellesse has become globally renowned for its bold and colourful sportswear and as a “sports fashion” brand, with its strong links to tennis - and big name players - being key to its long-standing high profile.

Boateng has been suitably photographed on a tennis court in the Ellesse collaboration collection alongside British tennis professional, Paul Jubb, who has an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) singles ranking of 207, which he achieved on 18 July 2022.
