Mango accelerates UK expansion of Mango Teen targeting 'gap in the market'

Lots of good news this week on the innovative retail front. There is some great in-store tech innovation for you to check out from Inditex's Bershka and ZARA, but from a strategy perspective, I wanted to highlight this news from rival Spanish group Mango.

Mango is targeting further growth from its Teen range by opening more standalone stores, saying there is a gap in the market to be filled. It already has Mango Teen stores in London (on Carnaby Street and at Westfield London) and now it's taking the concept to Glasgow. Worldwide, it has 40 standalone Teen stores and more are coming.

As the mother of a teen girl, I can confirm that this market is mysteriously under-served. I have traipsed around shopping malls in the UK and in Europe with my 13-year-old and failed to find anything suitable. Too old for ZARA Kids and too young for adult ranges, we felt in some sort of fashion limbo. In desperation, I recently bought some size XS adult trousers for her and her grandma adjust them to fit.

We have bought online from Mango Teen and it is great. The styles are current, age appropriate (which often adult young fashion is not) and they fit. The quality of Mango is also good for the price too.

It surprises me that other retailers have let this market slide. You only have to poke your nose into the door of a branch of Brandy Melville (you probably won't get further than that, it is invariably packed and sometimes there's a queue to get in) to realise that teen girls are hungry for fashion and they still enjoy visiting stores. At least they do enjoy visiting stores when there are clothes there that work for them, otherwise it's a miserable experience. I think Mango is on to a winner here. I wonder when others will wake up.

Why Selfridges is tapping into community-led sportswear brands like Sisterly Tribe

This week, Selfridges added Scandinavian athleisure label Sisterly Tribe to its sportswear offering, highlighting a shift toward community-driven, purpose-led brands.

Founded by Kristin Hars, Sisterly Tribe blends minimalist design with technical performance and a wellness-first mindset, building a loyal following online and in-person. I spoke to Hars to hear about her plans to take the UK by storm, including her Selfridges partnership and the wellness events she has planned to engage British consumers.

She said: "Luxury is no longer just about exclusivity, it’s about emotional connection, values and lifestyle alignment... Consumers are craving more meaning in the brands they support."

Selfridges tapping Sisterly Tribe reflects a broader evolution in luxury retail. Now joining a line-up that includes the likes of Alo Yoga, TALA and Adanola, Sisterly Tribe is part of Selfridges’ ongoing effort to meet the rising demand for elevated, community-driven activewear. With its roots in wellness and a clear design philosophy, the brand feels right at home among the new wave of labels shaping what luxury sportswear looks like today: purpose-led, emotionally resonant and aligned with women's daily routines.

Veronica Beard launches recycling denim campaign as it joins Cotton Lives On

It would be interesting to know the customer uptake on Veronica’s Beard’s new recycling denim campaign as part of the Cotton Lives On recycling programme, as reported this week.

The premium US womenswear brand is encouraging its customers to bring their pre-loved jeans into either of its two London stores - at 27 Bruton Street in Mayfair and 2 Symons Street, just off Sloane Square, in Chelsea – up until 12 August.

The unwanted jeans will then be turned into the recycled cotton insulating material used in mattresses for people at risk of homelessness through the Cotton Lives On recycling programme.

As a thank you, participating customers will be offered the opportunity to purchase any pair of Veronica Beard jeans with a 20% discount. Bearing in mind the brand’s jeans start at £211 and go up to £498, that’s not a bad amount off.

While Veronica Beard’s upmarket clientele are unlikely to be too bothered about such a discount, it could be a nice touch for an aspiring Veronica Beard shopper to get down with the Sloane Square and Mayfair set for the first time, and feel good about it. Also, apparently they will accept any pair of old jeans - from any brand - so long as the composition of the jeans it at least 85% cotton.
