Inside John Lewis' fashion revival: Peter Ruis talks game-changing strategies, exclusive partnerships, Topshop launch and more...

This week, TheIndustry.fashion’s Retail Reset Summit brought together some of the UK’s most forward-thinking fashion leaders for a day of insights, strategy, and networking at the prestigious Nobu Hotel in London.

Closing the event, John Lewis Managing Director Peter Ruis shared the retailer’s ambitious growth strategy - particularly in fashion - and outlining a series of bold initiatives aimed at repositioning the department store for the next era of retail.

Ruis offered an optimistic yet grounded perspective, drawing on decades of retail experience. Having held leadership roles at Ted Baker, Marks & Spencer, Jigsaw, and Anthropologie, he previously served as Executive Buying & Brand Director at John Lewis from 2005 to 2013. Returning as Managing Director in January 2024, he is now leading a transformative new phase for the business.

Since Ruis’ return, John Lewis has significantly expanded its fashion offering, securing numerous new brand partnerships, including exclusive launches and premium collections designed to engage both loyal and new customers. ASOS Brands Director on ushering in a retail renaissance via brand diversity, digital personalisation and innovation

At TheIndustry.fashion’s inaugural Retail Reset Summit, hosted at the glamorous Nobu Hotel, ASOS Brands Director Shazmeen Malik laid out how the online retailer is spearheading a retail renaissance through brand diversity, digital personalization, and innovation.

With oversight of over 350 brands and a team of 200 across buying and merchandising, Malik shared insider insights into how ASOS is evolving its multi-brand mix to engage today’s young, culturally attuned shoppers.

The summit also showcased ASOS’s digital-first approach, including new innovations like ASOS Live - a platform combining creator-led content with live shopping. With the Topshop relaunch already winning over shoppers and more innovations on the horizon, Malik’s interview captures ASOS at a pivotal moment in its evolution.

She said: "This next year is going to be really interesting for ASOS. We’re focused on improving the shopping experience and innovating through personalization. It’s key to get the right product in front of the right customer, especially when you have so many brands."

This interview is essential reading for anyone interested in the future of online retail and Malik's multi-brand strategy.

Tottenham Hotspur ups style stakes with new John Smedley collaboration

I’ve got to say that of all the recent football club and fashion brand collaborations going on lately, including the Arsenal x A-COLD-WALL* collection that launched earlier this month, I was quite taken aback by British heritage brand John Smedley joining forces with Tottenham Hotspur on a limited-edition knitwear collection, which launched this week.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s very classic and tastefully done, even down to the Spurs’ club crest - a cockerel standing on a football -in a tonal shade on the chest of the 100% Merino wool long-sleeved polo, ¼ zip neck jumper, crew neck, and V-neck knit, all in navy or grey options. No club colours involved. All very ‘elevated,’ as everyone says these days.

However, now retailing between £225 and £275 on the online Spurs Shop, it would be very interesting to know the uptake from fans - especially in light of what they already pay for season tickets and what they spend on matchday refreshments. There’s also a lambswool navy or grey beanie for a not-to-be-sniffed-at £80, and a scarf for £140 - perfect to keep warm on matchdays, not so great for the wallet.

My guess is that somebody at the club knows somebody at the brand, and they had a brainstorm over lunch at the shiny Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before taking up their spots in one of the executive boxes for one of the more top-tier matches. Somewhere along the line, though, the Spurs’ marketing team decided to get former ‘club legends’ Michael Dawson and Ledley King to model the range against the backdrop of Walthamstow Wetlands (with the stadium visible in the distance). Both were decent enough players in their day, but perhaps best to stick to punditry now!

Gen Z to transform Britain’s high streets into ‘tech-powered social hubs’ by 2050

Gen Z is poised to transform Britain’s high streets by 2050, driving a shift from traditional shopping destinations to tech-powered social hubs. According to new Retail 2050 research from American Express and futures consultancy Trajectory, 76% of Gen Z consumers want to use AI and technology to make shopping more immersive.

The findings reveal that 79% of Gen Z want high streets that blend retail, dining, and leisure, while 65% believe every trip to the high street should offer something they can’t experience online. As Gen Z’s spending power grows, so too do their expectations - demanding more experiential retail formats, personalised interactions, and seamless in-store technology.

As a Gen Z shopper myself - and someone who writes about evolving retail concepts professionally - I can fully relate. My work has made me a discerning customer, and I now expect retail experiences that match the innovation and insight I see shaping the sector every day.
