EcoBeautyScore Consortium launches with environmental impact initiative

36 cosmetics and personal care companies have joined together to launch the EcoBeautyScore Consortium, aiming to develop an industry-wide environmental impact assessment and scoring system for cosmetics products.

Inspired by a growing consumer demand for greater transparency in the beauty industry, the consortium hopes the initiative will provide consumers with clear, transparent and comparable environmental impact information.

A variety of global beauty businesses are now involved including Beiersdorf, Coty, The Estée Lauder Companies, L’Oréal, LVMH, Shiseido and Unilever.

Working with experienced sustainability consultancy Quantis, the consortium plans to co-build an assessment methodology and scoring system to assess environmental impact. They will also consult external experts, including scientists, academics and NGOs to maximise inclusivity.

A footprinting and scoring prototype is targeted for the end of 2022, providing the environmental scoring for a selection of product categories. It will then be verified by independent parties.

Emphasised by the EcoBeautyScore Consortium, the initiative is open to all cosmetics and personal care companies, regardless of their size or resources.
