Eco-conscious shoppers fuel Kind Bag growth

London-based sustainable start-up Kind Bag, which creates eco-friendly shopping bags out of recycled plastic bottles, has reported a strong first year of growth as shoppers, “eschew fast fashion items and look for sustainable products that stand the test of time,” the brand said.

Kind Bag, which turned over £500,000 in its first year and recycled more than 1.5 million plastic bottles in the process, said that growth had been fuelled by UK online sales and a “healthy export market,” with new distribution channels opening up across Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, Japan, Indonesia, Norway and Singapore.

Building on its first-year growth, the brand said it had “a strong NPD pipeline coming up” including a special collaboration with William Morris in the new year.

Lightweight, durable and water resistant, there are currently over 30 prints in the Kind Bag range – from geometric and retro through to floral and foodie.

Each eco-friendly bag is made using six old plastic bottles from the ocean and landfill sites that end up in waste collection centres in Asia.

Kind Bag is currently available in the UK from the brand’s website kindbag.co, Selfridges and independent retailers nationwide.

Founder Maria Rodriguez said: “We are currently the only reusable bag on the market to use 100% Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (RPET), with a completely sustainable and ethical production process.

"Everything from the product itself and the ink used, through to the recycled packaging has been carefully chosen with the planet in mind. We also work with the charity Just One Ocean to donate 10% of all profits to help preserve the oceans for future generations.

“With COVID-19 changing the retail landscape, we’ve seen consumer shopping behaviour shifting. Now more than ever consumers are eschewing fast fashion items and looking for sustainable products that stand the test of time,” Rodriguez added.
