eBay flooded with sellers looking to cash in on Lidl sneakers

eBay has been flooded with sellers trying to cash in on a pair of £14 Lidl sneakers that have taken the internet by storm.

The distinctive blue and yellow sports shoes come complete with Lidl logo on the tongue and were only made available for sale in Finland, where they retailed for the equivalent of £14. Some stores sold out within an hour of them hitting the shop floor.

They are now widely available on eBay with some sellers asking for up to £290 a pair. That would place them in roughly the same price bracket as some of the harder to track down cult Yeezy shoes by Kanye West.

The value supermarket has been inundated with requests from British shoppers to launch the shoes here, though there appear to be no immediate plans.

Launched last week, the shoes formed part of a wider branded apparel line that included sliders, t-shirts and socks and have divided opinion among sneaker aficionados with some enjoying the irony of the heavy branding and others being horrified.

The line brings to mind the collections of elevated streetwear brand Vetements which, under its former creative director Demna Gvasalia, would create apparel and accessories using every day brands, from DHL to Ikea, sell them for hundreds of pounds and create a sensation in the process.

For cash-strapped COVID-era, supermarket special editions could become the new streetwear must-haves.
