eBay expands authenticity guarantee in UK amid soaring demand for pre-loved designer fashion

eBay has rolled out its authenticity guarantee for apparel in the UK, aiming to enhance trust and transparency for buyers of pre-loved high-end fashion on the platform.

Already trusted for authenticating luxury watches, handbags, sneakers and jewellery, the expansion extends eBay's expertise across the entire fashion spectrum - from apparel and shoes to accessories.

Under the expanded authenticity guarantee, every eligible item undergoes "meticulous inspection" by expert authenticators. Once verified, the item is securely shipped to the buyer with tracked delivery and comes with a unique, QR-enabled authentication card.

The service is completely free for buyers and is designed to be "fast, seamless, and fully integrated into the eBay shopping experience".

The authentication guarantee now covers:

  • Sneakers from select brands listed at £100+
  • Watches from select brands priced at £1,500+
  • Handbags and accessories from select luxury brands
  • Jewellery from select brands priced at £500+
  • Apparel, shoes, and accessories from select brands priced at £200+

Kirsty Keoghan, GM European Fashion at eBay, said: "Trust is one of the biggest hurdles in pre-loved fashion. Expanding our authenticity guarantee to clothing gives people the confidence to buy the styles they love, from staples to statement pieces, knowing every item has been verified by experts.

"With whole-look authentication now possible, our goal is to make pre-loved fashion a natural first choice."

Since its launch in the US, eBay has continued to expand its authentication programme globally. Between April and June 2025, the programme reached a new milestone - inspecting over one million items in a single quarter for the first time. To date, more than 15 million items have been authenticated worldwide.

It comes as eBay’s latest Watchlist Trend Report highlights a growing demand for pre-loved designer fashion on the platform, with search behaviour reflecting strong interest in both iconic heritage brands and emerging accessible luxury labels.

In June 2024 alone, the term "vintage" was searched more than 1,000 times per minute on eBay.

When it comes to heritage luxury brands, Louis Vuitton and Gucci continue to dominate. In 2025, they remain the most purchased luxury brands on eBay worldwide, with over 2.6 million Louis Vuitton listings and 2.1 million for Gucci.

Meanwhile, accessible luxury is on the rise. Brands like On Running and Longchamp are gaining traction, joining legacy names in driving new consumer interest.

Goyard is also thriving thanks to its popularity in street style culture, while Wales Bonner is experiencing a surge in visibility, driven by high-profile sportswear collaborations.
