Global marketplace, eBay, has entered a definitive agreement to acquire Certilogo, a provider of AI-powered digital IDs, to utilise its ID technology to enhance the pre-loved shopping experience.

Not only does Certilogo’s AI-powered tool authenticate, but it also unlocks a wealth of information about apparel and brands. In addition, the company champions sustainability by using its technology to empower brands and designers to manage the lifecycle of their garments and easily activate circular services.

Michele Casucci, CEO and Founder of Certilogo, said: "Certilogo was created to build connections between consumers and brands, utilizing technology to simplify and strengthen those relationships and unlock information that fundamentally changes how we interact with apparel and accessories.

"eBay pioneered re-commerce, while Certilogo pioneered connected products and consumer-facing digital authentication. By joining forces, we will be able to make an immediate and significant contribution, taking advantage of already consolidated skills and infrastructures, promoting a model that has its foundation in community and circularity."

This acquisition solidifies eBay as a trusted destination to shop for pre-loved fashion. Customers will be able to shop with more confidence, as the retail landscape increasingly becomes more sustainably conscious.

Charis Marquez, VP of eBay, commented: "For many years, consumers have turned to eBay as a trusted destination for buying and selling preloved apparel and fashion goods, not only because of the unmatched selection but because of our commitment to utilizing the latest technology to empower our sellers and buyers."

"Certilogo’s technology and talented team allows eBay to build on this commitment, establishing eBay as a leader in pre-loved fashion, and offering new ways for consumers to connect and engage with brands."

eBay signed a definitive agreement to acquire Certilogo on 15 May 2023. Closing the deal is subject to the satisfaction of customary conditions and is expected to occur in the third quarter.

This follows a string of investments made by eBay to drive its pre-loved fashion category. Last month, the company launched its new ‘Certified by Brand’ program, partnering directly with brands to scale their presence in the secondary market, whilst providing shoppers access to a wider selection of luxury watches, handbags, and jewellery.
