Donatella publishes intimate history of Versace

Donatella Versace is set to release an intimate history of the luxury Italian fashion house established by her late brother Gianni Versace and which she has been heading since 1997.

Called simply VERSACE, the 336pp tome will be published by Rizzoli New York and released next month. It is co-authored by fashion critic and curator Maria Luisa Frisa and W magazine editor-in-chief Stefano Tonchi. It also features contributions from fashion critic for the Business of Fashion Tim Blanks and the late Ingrid Sischy, the revered critic and international editor for US Vogue and Vanity Fair, among others.

The book includes archival and contemporary imagery such as catwalks and backstage shots, as well as intimate images from the atelier. Photography from Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel and Mario Testino among others is featured as well as images of Versace fashion modelled by the original "supers" Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista.

Gianni Versace founded his house in the late 1970s and opened his first store on Milan's Via dell Spiga in 1978. He was one of the first fashion designers to forge close links with the music industry and names such as Elton John and Madonna were among his vast fanbase.

The 1990s were the peak of Versace's career but his life was cut tragically short when he was shot by serial killer Andrew Cunanan near his home in Miami. Princess Diana was among the mourners at his funeral.

Donatella, who had been a close collaborator during her brother's career, took over the creative direction house in 1997 and it has gone on to remain a major force in fashion. The VERSACE book chronicles her interpretation of the house in the 21st century.

Last week the house announced that singer Zayn Malik would be collaborating with Donatella Versace on a capsule collection for the brand's younger line Versus Versace.
