Did the Met Gala force quiet luxury to take a back seat?

Despite quiet luxury’s rise to popularity, the Met Gala proves more is still more after searches for pearl and tweed dresses soar to all-time highs.

Analysis of Google search data reveals that online searches for ‘pearl dress' and 'tweed dress' skyrocketed by 267% and 233% on May 2 (the day after the Met Gala). These statistics reflect all-time high searches.

Just last month, research conducted by fashion experts Karen Millen suggested that ostentatious displays of wealth and luxury fashion are no longer trending. Searches for 'quiet luxury’ exploded by 373% over the last month to an all-time high.

However, as celebrities sported pearl-clad and overly-adorned gowns in tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, it seems onlookers remembered the power of accessories and adornment – the opposite of ‘quiet luxury’.

A new finding by Karen Millen reveals that online interest in pearl and tweed dresses more than tripled the average volume the day after celebrities took to the Met Gala red carpet, reflecting an unprecedented spike in searches as the public was inspired by looks worn by celebrities such as Anne Hathaway, Dua Lipa, and Kim Kardashian.

The Met Gala, titled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, also saw many designers using Lagerfeld's signature Chanel brides, which were often depicted as the closing looks at his over-the-top runway shows, as inspiration for their red carpet creations. These looks boosted bridalwear searches.

Online searches for ‘white dress’ shot up by 75% to a five-year high, with searches for 'white gown' also rising by 99% to an all-time high. Searches for 'Chanel wedding dress' and ‘dress with train’ skyrocketed by 1,110% and 271% after the event.

A spokesperson for Karen Millen commented: "This year’s theme naturally inspired guests to embrace Lagerfeld’s bridal designs into their looks, and white was clearly the biggest trend. These findings show how influential the Met Gala is on fashion trends worldwide, with searches for bridalwear, white, tweed, and pearls soaring during fashion’s biggest night."
