Designer Focus: Holly Fulton

David Watts
24 February 2016

Holly Fulton is a London based designer who hails from Scotland and who trained at the RCA in London.  She launched her eponymous womenswear brand in February 2009 and, following support from the British Fashion Council's NEWGEN initiative for five seasons, has gone on to create a very successful business which shows on the London Fashion Week schedule.

Fulton who is well known for her print, has developed her own unique visual language, drawing upon a dizzying array of sources, from art deco lines and Bauhaus shapes, to pop art painting and psychedelic illustration. Rich multi-layered surfaces reflect a genuine love of both art history and popular culture.

The Holly Fulton woman is confident, successful and very self assured but likes feminine, wearable fashion, something Fulton excels at and has garnered her a loyal following with stores such as NET-A-PORTER, Galeries Lafayette and Harvey Nichols.

For the past three seasons, Fulton has been working with US branding solutions company Avery Dennison RBIS on exciting new technical print development for her collections. RBIS produces many of the technical print and woven components for brands such as NIKE, Puma, and Adidas as well as 2D and 3D packaging and branding worldwide.

For SS16 Fulton used silicone moulded components on her dresses and tailoring. For the AW16 season RBIS worked to develop panels of jacquard weave from its Collitex factory in Italy, using exclusive Lurex threads to create shimmer and shine. These have been woven into full panels for the collection utilised in bra-tops, belts and playsuits.

Furthermore, RBIS developed a range of chenille patches that were heat applied to parka jackets and skirts in symmetrical pattern placements. Inspired by the visionary works of British artist David Inshaw, the AW16 collection features camo greens and rich chocolate browns borrowed from the painter’s graphic, mossy aesthetic, giving a sense of outdoors and a renewed focus on outerwear and warmth.

“We’re honored to continue our collaboration with Holly Fulton who continues to break new ground and implement new design techniques, including our weaving expertise,” commented Amy White, vice president of Global Branding Solutions for Avery Dennison RBIS.
