Iconic London department store Liberty has named Adil Mehboob-Khan as its new CEO, who has said he believes the business has "significant global potential".

Mehboob-Khan joins the store from luxury eyewear group Luxottica, where he had been CEO from 2014 until December last year.

Prior to that he was chief executive of hair products business Wella and, before that, vice-president of beauty for Europe at Procter & Gamble. He fills a vacancy left by Ed Burstell who left the business in October 2016.

“Few, if any companies have Liberty London’s rich and storied heritage,” Mehboob-Khan said of the store, which was founded in 1875.

“With its landmark central London store, unique fabrics business and exclusive Liberty London collection, this national icon has significant global potential – I am thrilled to join at such an exciting time," he added.

Marco Capello, the chairman of Liberty London and managing partner of its private equity owner BlueGem Capital Partners said: “We have been searching for an individual of Adil’s calibre for some time and are excited to welcome a person with broad experience across beauty, brand and retail to drive us to the next level.”

Liberty has received significant investment in the past year with a major revamp and extension of its menswear floor and a remodelling of its womenswear department.
