Department store group Debenhams has appointed David Adams, a former deputy CEO of rival House of Fraser, as non-executive director.

Adams will join the Audit and Remuneration Committees of the board and will become chairman of the Audit Committee in January 2018, when Mark Rolfe, the current chairman of the Audit Committee, intends to step down from the Debenhams board.

Debenhams chairman Sir Ian Cheshire said he was delighted to welcome Adams to the board: "He has had a long and distinguished career in the retail and consumer goods industries. His knowledge of the consumer and leisure sectors as well as his financial credentials will be a great addition to the board."

Adams was finance director and deputy CEO at House of Fraser until 2006, when he became executive chairman of Jessops moving on to be non-executive chairman in 2009. He is also the senior independent non-executive director at Halfords Group and is a director of a number of AIM listed companies including Conviviality Retail, Fever Tree Drinks, Elegant Hotels Group and Thinksmart.
